Another NCAA basketball season, another crop of highly touted freshman. Much was expected of this year's class of 18-year-olds, but have they delivered in the early going? Here are updates of the consensus top 10 freshman this season.
(consensus high school rankings courtesy of DraftExpress)
1) Anthony Davis - Kentucky
12.7 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 4.3 bpg, 71.4 FG %
Critics are justifiably saying that Anthony Davis needs to be tougher/stronger and develop his offensive game, but you can't argue with his results thus far, especially on the defensive end.
2) Austin Rivers - Duke
14.4 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.1 apg
The most polarizing player in this year's freshman class is definitely Austin Rivers who, only a few games into his collegiate career, already has stories written about his weaknesses as a player. On the court he is delivering what you could have expected - he's scoring, but he takes a lot of shots (leads the team), doesn't shoot for a good percentage (43.4%) and leads Duke in turnovers.
3) Michael Kidd-Gilchrist - Kentucky
12.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.8 spg
The man known primarily for his defense is bringing it on the other end of the court too, including this Dunk of the Year worthy slam.
4) Bradley Beal - Florida
17.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.0 apg
Florida's has a ridiculous amount of talent and depth in their backcourt, so it wasn't known for sure how many minutes Bradley Beal would be getting early on. No worries in that department - the freshman leads the team in minutes (32.3/game), which speaks to his level of talent.
5) Quincy Miller - Baylor
15.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.4 apg
With returning star Perry Jones III having to sit out the Bears' first five games this season due to a NCAA suspension, freshman Quincy Miller has taken over as "The Man". It will be interesting to see if his performance suffers at all now that Jones is eligible to play again.
6) James Michael McAdoo - North Carolina
6.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.2 spg
Getting minutes as a freshman in Chapel Hill these days can be tough, even for a talent like James Michael McAdoo. The Norfolk, Virginia product is getting about 15 minutes of burn off the bench for the Tar Heels.
7) Marquis Teague - Kentucky
11.7 ppg, 4.0 apg, 2.0 spg
The latest in an endless line of star freshman point guards on John Calipari teams, Marquis Teague is steering the Wildcats' ship for 30 minutes a night. And the good news is he seems to be getting less turnover-prone each game.
8) Adonis Thomas - Memphis
10.0 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.2 bpg
The stud of the Tigers' freshman class this year is hometown boy Adonis Thomas, who is having an up-and-down start to his college career (double-figure scoring one game, single-digit the next).
9) LeBryan Nash - Oklahoma State
10.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg
Not the best of starts for LeBryan Nash as a Cowboy - he's shooting 34.7% from the field and questions abound over his work ethic and attitude.
10) Myck Kabongo - Texas
8.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 5.2 apg
It's been a struggle for Myck Kabongo running the point for Texas - 29% shooting and over three turnovers a game.
